Here's Why "Wrong" and "Safety" Can't Be In The Same Sentence!

The fact is, in our industry, the things that keep us safe can’t be wrong.

Why? We’ll, quite simply, because lives depend on them being right.

I bet you didn’t know that history has a bunch of things we all thought were right but now we know are wrong. Take for instance a few of these top historical misconceptions:

• Benjamin Franklin did not discover electricity when his kite was struck by lightning in 1752. In fact, electricity was already well known at the time. Instead, Franklin was trying to prove the electrical nature of lightning.
• You can see a lot of things while standing on the moon, but the Great Wall of China isn't one of them.
• Although there really were witch trials in Salem, Massachusetts, in 1692, and 20 people were put to death, none of the accused were burned at the stake.
• Ask anyone and they'll tell you that Cinderella wore glass slippers to the ball, but historians say that part of the legend isn't true. More than 500 versions of the classic fairy tale exist, dating back as far as the 9th century. In each account, Cinderella has a magic ring or magic slippers made of gold, silver, or some other rare metal, which are sometimes covered with gems but are never made of glass.
• George Washington didn’t have wooden teeth. Washington did have horrifically bad teeth. He even wore multiple sets of dentures throughout his life made of ivory, gold, and lead — but not wood, according to the organization that runs Washington's famed estate, Mount Vernon. Washington did love his port though. The burgundy-colored drink may have stained his teeth, making them appear brown and grainy, like wood.

Ok, maybe these aren’t the facts that you were expecting but, you have to admit, some of these historical facts are just plain fun to know.

• Now, here’s a historical fact that is not a misconception and backed-up by the Wireless Estimator Fatalities Report:

  • The tower climbing occupation is one of the most dangerous jobs in the United States.
  • Since 2003, the U.S. tower structure industry has reported 130 total fatalities.

Now, back to our topic - in an industry in which safety can’t be wrong all of us at Midwest Unlimited started talking about what it means to be so dead-on right that it’s ‘Proven’! To be proven means the truth or existence of something is demonstrated by unequivocal evidence or argument.

That’s where Midwest Unlimited comes into play. We’re kicking off our 70th anniversary this year with the blog series, ‘Proven like…’ For 70-years we’ve been committed to an industry where the products we provide cannot be wrong. Ever. Your life depends on it - and our history in supplying unlimited products focused on immeasurable safety has been proven since 1947.

The truth is, if you’re reading this then we know you have a proven interest in your profession and that you’re more than likely to be compliant rather than complacent. You’re a leader that exudes the flexibility needed to get the job done right. It’s also highly likely that because of the dedication to your occupation you have your own equipment and you know what equipment you like best.

So, in other words, you’re a professional, and you’re proven.

Proven like...NATE...

It gives us great pride that we belong to the tower industry’s National Association, NATE where they even state in their general information tab on their Facebook page:

• “NATE has proven that a good idea coupled with relentless effort can take you a long way -- but there is still much more for NATE to accomplish. From consistency in training to a role in developing federal regulations, NATE members have proven that getting involved makes a difference. But we are never far from our Safety First - Safety Always Mission!”

Or, proven like...OSHA

• “OSHA has proven over the past 40 years that we can have both jobs and job safety.”
